Chimney Fire Safety Awareness Week
What is Chimney Fire Safety Week?
It’s an annual national campaign to educate homeowners about the risks of chimney fires. It encourages people to take proactive steps to ensure their chimney and appliances are safe.
When is it held?
September 1st-7th 2025.
What are the key messages?
Use Correct Fuels:
Only use fuels appropriate for your appliance, ensuring they are dry and certified for use.

Burning wet wood causes excessive tar build-up, or creosote, in chimneys because incomplete combustion releases more unburned gases and steam, which then condense and harden into a flammable residue on the cooler flue walls.
This tar can lead to chimney fires and damage the chimney system. To prevent this, always burn firewood with a moisture content below 20% and ensure your chimney is cleaned regularly.
Regular Sweeping:
Have your chimney professionally inspected and swept at least once or twice a year, depending on your fuel use.
