2025 is a Mast Year, but what is a mast year?

🌰 2025 Is a Mast Year – What Does That Mean? 🌳

If you’ve noticed acorns, beechnuts, and other seeds everywhere this autumn — you’re not imagining things. 2025 is shaping up to be a mast year!

🔎 What’s a Mast Year?
It’s when trees like oaks & beeches synchronize and produce a massive crop of seeds all at once. This happens only every few years and affects entire forests.

🌿 Why Do Trees Do It?

  • To overwhelm seed-eaters (like squirrels & mice) so some seeds survive.

  • To boost pollination success by flowering together.

  • To recharge in between, since it takes a lot of energy!

🐿️ What Are the Effects?

  • More food for wildlife

  • Forest regeneration

  • Rodent & predator population booms

  • Potential lean years after

📸 Nature lovers: Keep your eyes out for forest floors covered in nuts, heavy-laden branches, or wildlife taking full advantage.

💡 Fun Fact: The word mast comes from the Old English word for “forest nuts used to feed pigs.”
